Privacy policy
Effective June 16, 2026
This policy explains what HomeTechOps (“we,” “us”) collects, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have. We try to collect as little as possible: you can read every runbook and use every planning tool without an account, without logging in, and without giving us your name.
What we collect
We collect three narrow categories of data:
- Information you give us. If you subscribe to the newsletter, we store the email address you submit. If you send feedback or rate a page, we store what you submit. Do not include passwords, credentials, serial numbers, or other sensitive details in free-text fields.
- Usage and tool data. When you use a planning tool or rate a page, we may store the non-identifying inputs and the result so we can improve the tools (for example, which calculator was used and its result tier). These are not tied to an account.
- Technical data collected automatically. Like virtually all websites, our host records standard server logs (IP address, browser/user-agent, pages requested, timestamps, and referrer) to operate, secure, and debug the site. We also use privacy-friendly, aggregate analytics (see below).
How we use it
- To operate, secure, and improve the site and its tools.
- To send the newsletter you asked for (and nothing else), with an unsubscribe link in every email.
- To understand, in aggregate, which pages and tools are useful so we can prioritize what to build and fix.
- To detect, prevent, and respond to abuse, fraud, and security issues.
- To comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use the details you submit to build advertising profiles about you.
Cookies & similar technologies
Cookies are small files a site or its partners can store in your browser. We aim to keep cookie use minimal:
- Essential / functional: a small amount of local storage is used to remember your light/dark theme choice. This stays in your browser and is not sent to us.
- Analytics: our analytics provider is configured to measure traffic in aggregate without cookies that track you across other websites (see Analytics).
- Advertising & affiliates: if and when we display third-party ads or use affiliate links, those partners may set their own cookies (see Advertising and Affiliate links). You can control these through the opt-out choices below.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking cookies will not stop you from reading any page or using any tool on this site.
Analytics
We use Vercel Analytics, a privacy-friendly analytics service that reports visits in aggregate. It is designed not to use cross-site tracking cookies and not to collect personally identifying information or sell data. It helps us see which pages are visited and how the site performs, not who you are.
Advertising
HomeTechOps does not currently display third-party advertising. As the site grows we expect to work with a reputable advertising partner (for example, an ad-management network). When we do, this section will name the partner, and the following will apply:
- Third-party ad vendors and ad exchanges may use cookies, device identifiers, and similar technologies to serve and measure ads, including interest-based (personalized) ads.
- These partners collect data under their own privacy policies, which we will link here.
- You can opt out of interest-based advertising using the industry tools listed under Opt-out choices below, and through your device or browser settings.
Affiliate links
Some pages — especially comparison and buying guides — contain outbound links to manufacturers and retailers. Some of these are, or will become, affiliate links: if you buy after clicking one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Affiliate networks typically use a cookie to attribute a purchase to the referring site.
How we choose what to recommend is independent of these commissions — see our editorial & methodology policy. Affiliate programs we participate in (such as the Amazon Associates program and similar networks) operate under their own privacy policies.
Who we share data with
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with service providers that help us run the site, and only as needed:
- Hosting & infrastructure (Vercel) — serves the site and keeps standard server logs.
- Analytics (Vercel Analytics) — aggregate traffic measurement.
- Email/newsletter provider (beehiiv) — delivers the newsletter to subscribers who opt in.
- Database hosting — stores newsletter subscriptions and non-identifying feedback/tool events.
- Advertising and affiliate partners — only where applicable, as described above, under their own policies.
- Legal & safety — we may disclose data if required by law or to protect the site, our users, or the public.
How long we keep data
- Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them.
- Server logs and aggregate analytics are retained only as long as needed for security, debugging, and trend analysis, then expire or are aggregated.
- Feedback and tool-usage events are kept in non-identifying form to improve the site.
Your privacy rights (GDPR / CCPA / CPRA)
Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal data. We honor these requests regardless of your location:
- Access — ask what personal data we hold about you.
- Correction — ask us to fix inaccurate data.
- Deletion — ask us to delete your data (for example, your newsletter email).
- Portability — ask for a copy of data you provided, in a portable format.
- Objection / restriction — object to or restrict certain processing.
- Opt out of “sale” or “sharing” — we do not sell personal information; if any sharing for cross-context behavioral advertising occurs through advertising partners, you can opt out using the controls below.
- Non-discrimination — we will not treat you differently for exercising these rights.
EEA/UK residents: our legal bases are your consent (newsletter), legitimate interests (operating, securing, and improving the site), and legal obligations. California residents have rights under the CCPA/CPRA as described above. To exercise any right, contact us (see below); we may need to verify your request.
Opt-out choices & signals
You can limit tracking and interest-based advertising through these industry and browser tools:
- Browser settings — block or delete cookies, or use private browsing.
- Global Privacy Control (GPC) — we honor the GPC signal as a valid opt-out of “sale”/“sharing” where applicable.
- Industry opt-outs — the Digital Advertising Alliance (optout.aboutads.info), the Network Advertising Initiative (optout.networkadvertising.org), and YourAdChoices; in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu.
- Google ad personalization — adssettings.google.com.
Because there is no common standard for browser “Do Not Track” signals, we treat the more specific GPC signal as our opt-out mechanism.
Children's privacy
HomeTechOps is intended for adults operating their own home technology. It is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA/UK), and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
Security & international transfers
We use reputable providers and reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect data, though no method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure. Our providers may process data in the United States and other countries; where required, transfers rely on appropriate safeguards.
Please do not submit passwords, router or admin credentials, serial numbers, medical or financial information, or sensitive work details through any form or tool on this site.
Changes & contact
We may update this policy as the site evolves — for example, when we introduce an advertising partner or a new affiliate program. Material changes will be reflected in the effective date at the top. Questions or privacy requests? Reach us through the contact page.
