Apple Intelligence using 20–30 GB on macOS 27
macOS 27 downloads Apple Intelligence models automatically. See the real size in Storage settings, why it isn't System Data, and safe ways to free space.
Start here: Confirm macOS 27 and the tier
Run `sw_vers` and the `system_profiler` chip/memory check.
Problem summary
On macOS 27, Apple Intelligence is available automatically on eligible Macs, and its on-device models download to the startup disk. Apple says this needs up to 14 GB on Macs with M3 or later and at least 12 GB of unified memory, and up to 8 GB on other supported Macs. Some measured Macs show more: MacRumors saw 20.67 GB on an M4 Pro Mac mini, and The Eclectic Light Company saw 29.45 GB. Storage settings lists this under macOS, not under System Data. Apple's macOS 27 guide lets you turn off individual features, but it does not describe a way to delete the downloaded models. Measure your real free space, turn off the features you don't want, and free space from your own files. Don't use removal tools or delete files from Recovery.
Run `sw_vers` and `system_profiler SPHardwareDataType | grep -E "Chip|Memory"`.
sw_vers
macOS 27 and a chip/memory pair that places the Mac in Apple's 14 GB or 8 GB tier.
Don't delete model folders or run removal tools.

Step-by-step runbook
Start here. Do each check in order, compare it to the expected result, and stop when the evidence explains the failure or the safe stop point applies.
Confirm macOS 27 and the tier
Check: Run `the "Check the macOS version" command below` and the `system_profiler` chip/memory check.
Expected result: macOS 27; you know whether Apple's figure is 14 GB or 8 GB.
If not: Not on 27: use the System Data runbook.
Read the Apple Intelligence size
Check: System Settings → General → Storage → ⓘ next to macOS.
Expected result: A size is listed.
If not: Wait for the bar to finish calculating.
Measure real free space
Check: Run `the "Measure real free space" command below`, again a day later.
Expected result: A stable free-space figure.
If not: Don't act on the first reading after the upgrade.
Turn off unwanted features
Check: Use Apple's switches: Turn Off Siri, summaries, Screen Time restrictions.
Expected result: Features off; storage unchanged.
If not: Check Apple's guide if a setting is missing.
Safe stop: Don't delete model folders or run removal tools.
Free space from your own files
Check: Use Apple's Storage recommendations, old device backups, Photos library on external, Downloads and Trash.
Expected result: Container Free Space rises.
If not: Plan external or larger storage if it doesn't rise enough.
Confirm SIP
Check: Run `the "Confirm System Integrity Protection" command below`.
Expected result: Enabled.
If not: Re-enable it with Apple's steps.
Safe stop: Never disable SIP to remove system files.

Decision tree
If: The Apple Intelligence figure is within Apple's tier and free space is fine.
Then: This is expected macOS 27 behaviour.
Action: Leave it; turn off features you don't want if you prefer.
If: The Apple Intelligence figure is above Apple's tier.
Then: Reported on several Macs; Apple has not explained it.
Action: Record the figure and the macOS build, and re-check after the next macOS update.
Safe stop: Don't delete model folders or run removal tools.
If: System Data, not Apple Intelligence, is the large block.
Then: A different problem.
Action: Follow the System Data runbook.
If: Free space dropped right after the upgrade.
Then: Used space can peak for a day or so after the upgrade and then fall back.
Action: Re-measure Container Free Space a day later before acting.
If: Free space is still too low for updates after clearing your own files.
Then: The startup disk is too small for macOS 27 plus your data.
Action: Move media to an external drive or plan a larger internal disk.
Safe stop: Don't skip security updates to save space.
Evidence table
| Symptom | Evidence to collect | Likely layer | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free space fell by 20–30 GB after the macOS 27 upgrade. | Apple Intelligence size under the macOS ⓘ in Storage settings. | Apple Intelligence model storage. | Compare with Apple's tier for your chip and memory. |
| Free space dropped much more right after upgrading. | Container Free Space now and a day later. | Temporary use after the upgrade. | Re-measure before deleting anything. |
| Turned off Siri but storage did not change. | Apple Intelligence size before and after. | The switches stop features; they don't delete models. | Free space from your own files. |
| System Data is huge. | System Data size and `tmutil listlocalsnapshots /`. | Caches, app data, backups or snapshots. | Use the System Data or snapshot runbook. |
Commands and settings paths
Check the macOS version
sw_versWhere: Terminal on the Mac.
Expected: ProductVersion 27.0.1 and BuildVersion 26A434 on the current release.
Failure means: A 26.x version means the Mac is not on macOS 27.
Safe next step: Use the System Data runbook instead.
Check chip and memory tier
system_profiler SPHardwareDataType | grep -E "Chip|Memory"Where: Terminal on the Mac.
Expected: Prints the Chip and Memory lines.
Failure means: M1/M2, or under 12 GB of memory, is Apple's up-to-8 GB tier.
Safe next step: Compare the Storage figure with the right tier.
Measure real free space
diskutil info / | grep "Container Free Space"Where: Terminal on the Mac.
Expected: Shows the free space available to the startup disk.
Failure means: A low figure after cleanup means the disk is too small for current use.
Safe next step: Free space from your own files or add external storage.
List local snapshots
tmutil listlocalsnapshots /Where: Terminal on the Mac.
Expected: Prints `Snapshots for disk /:` followed by any snapshot names.
Failure means: Snapshots present is normal; Apple removes them when space is needed.
Safe next step: Use the local snapshots runbook only if an operation actually fails.
Confirm System Integrity Protection
csrutil statusWhere: Terminal on the Mac.
Expected: `System Integrity Protection status: enabled.`
Failure means: Disabled means something lowered system security.
Safe next step: Re-enable it from macOS Recovery with Apple's documented steps.
Hardware and platform boundary
Change only when
- Container Free Space stays too low for macOS updates after you have removed or moved your own data.
- Your Photos or media library has outgrown the internal disk; an external SSD holds it without touching system files.
Evidence that matters
- Internal SSD capacity, since macOS 27 keeps Apple Intelligence models on the startup disk.
- Chip and memory, which set Apple's stated tier (up to 14 GB or up to 8 GB).
Evidence that does not matter
- Cleaner or removal app features — they don't give back supported space.
Avoid
- Third-party Apple Intelligence removal tools or profiles.
- Buying a small-SSD Mac on the assumption that Apple Intelligence can be switched off to free the space.
